Google Cloud VMware Migration - Dye & Durham - March - May 2022

I have been working with Dye & Durham to migrate their on-premise VMware environment to Google Cloud VMware Engine. This has involved extensive terraform IaC to provision networks, firewall rules and load balancers as well as in depth knowledge of VMware vSphere & Site Recovery Manager. I was also able to deploy a new backup solution for the client that utilises the new GCVE platform in order to reduce costs for the client.

IT Manager December 2020 – March 2022

National Pump & Energy are the leading supplier of pumping, compressed air and generators for hire to the mining, government and civil sectors. In December 2020, I was selected to become the IT Manager from a number of candidates, both internal and external to the company. This is a challenging role with my team spread across the country and COVID-19 causing problems with travel, however it is likely the most rewarding role I have had in my IT career. We have a large amount of exciting projects in the pipeline and I love seeing my team of young enthusiastic people tackle each project to ensure success for the team and the business.

National Pump & Energy

DevOps & Infrastructure Engineer June 2020 – December 2020

National Pump & Energy are the leading supplier of pumping, compressed air and generators for hire to the mining, government and civil sectors. I was brought on to develop the cloud capabilities and software the company uses for managing purchase orders and business intelligence along with future software tasks. My role quickly became that of a mentor to the rest of the IT Team both on the east and west costs of Australia. In December 2020, I successfully deployed the purchase order management system to Azure after 5 months of development.

CareLynx Pty Ltd

Development & Systems Manager September 2019 – June 2020

CareLynx is a small startup in the Aged Care industry providing cutting edge clinical management software in the cloud. The Development and Systems Manager role involves the day to day running of multiple Google Kubernetes Engine deployments along with managing a software development team of 5. I also head the help desk and liaise with clients when they encounter issues within the software or platform. Whilst the primary focus of my role is on developing software and liaising with clients, I am also asked from time to time to help with the server and network in our Cairns office and the staff laptops and desktops running there as well as the Nurses we have located around the country.

Herron Todd White

Systems Engineer, Software Developer November 2015 – September 2019

As the Systems Engineer at Herron Todd White I am responsible for the overall design, implementation and maintenance of cloud, core and office infrastructure and desktop solutions to meet the requirements of an extremely fast paced and technically demanding organisation of nearly 900 staff across almost 60 offices spanning the country. For almost four years I was the senior and only engineer within the organisation. As of April 2019 I moved to the Software Development team as a Ruby & C# developer working on our data capture and scheduling application alongside another nineteen developers. In June I was appointed as the lead developer for the manual booking Ruby on Rails application and manage three developers in Manila. Our apps are deployed across a range of technologies including Google Kubernetes Engine, Google Compute Engine as well as on-premise within VMware and XenServer. Most apps are automatically deployed once they have passed testing.

I resigned from Ray White to become the primary care giver to our new son and also to start my own business as a technology consultant running web hosting, development and cloud consulting. I took on a C# Web Forms application for a Brisbane towing company so they can better manage their jobs and deployed it to AWS. I also consulted to various companies to assist them in moving on premise applications to AWS Cloud.

Infrastructure Engineer December 2011 – December 2013

During my tenure at Ray White my primary responsibilities included the design, implementation and maintenance of all Ray Whites’ websites. I was also required to deploy new code releases to the three core website stacks as well as some minor PHP development work. My main accomplishment during my tenure was the migration of around 3,000 WordPress websites and 180,000 DNS records across around 3,000 domain names from a corporate hosting provider to Amazon Web Services.

Forrester Kurts Properties, Aveo

Web Administrator (Contract) May 2011 – December 2011

As a contractor to FKP for seven months, I was required to bring their web infrastructure off ageing MS Windows equipment and redevelop selected websites to be compatible with a new Linux web hosting server. I also developed and deployed a link system between FKPs’ finance system and ANZ online banking to automatically process payments and balance accounts.

Perfection Holdings Pty Ltd

Technical Engineer January 2010 – May 2011

Perfection Holdings provided Web Hosting, Design, VOIP and full service telecommunications to business customers in the SMB sector. My role was the design, implementation and operation of the web hosting and VOIP platforms. Whilst the company showed excellent growth, family commitments forced me to resign my directorship.

Department of Defence – Army

Soldier January 1996 – October 2003

Duties whilst a member of 1st Field Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery included surveying gun battery location to within 1mm2, calculating the pointing of artillery pieces by use of computer software and manual calculations, radio communications with VHF, UHF and HF with standard whip antennas, vehicle mounted radio systems and rear eshelon large antenna farms and building and maintaining the 1st Field Regiment website on Defence owned infrastructure running ColdFusion.

Coherence

I am the project founder of the Coherence project. Coherence is a fledgling project that aims to bring the integration you get in the Apple ecosystem with calls and messages between devices to Linux and Android.

SensaWeb

During my spare time I assist in the development of a radiation monitoring IoT device. My involvement is mainly around the board design (component level) and Python code that runs the device.

GDG Cloud Brisbane

You will find me at almost every GDG Cloud Brisbane meetup assisting the organisers and helping people to get the most out of the Google Cloud Platform ecosystem.
